From Alexander McQueen — “The Bumster”

From Dior — “The New Look”

As designers, we get the opportunity to tell stories in a unique yet captivating way. We’re able to take information, regardless of the topic, and transform it into something fascinating.

For my senior project, I wanted to tell the story of how important fashion really is. What we wear goes so far beyond solely aesthetics, as clothing has so much subtext, history, and culture built into it. The perspective fashion gives us on how the world evolves is uniquely relatable; we all participate in clothing at some level.

The Fabric of Society tells some of fashion’s story, and it does so through the work of five fashion designers. All five of the designers featured have passed on, but their work will continue to be a huge source of inspiration for me and countless others — with this book I wish to honor them and their contributions.

Christian Dior defined the style of a postwar world, Halston made the minimal sensational, Vivienne Westwood outfitted a cultural revolution, Thierry Mugler empowered the woman, and Alexander McQueen changed the waistline forever.

The fabric of our society can represent many things: conformity, rebellion, apathy, commentary, an escape, a facade, a reflection, whatever you choose — so what is it to you?
